Six things your doctor isn't telling you about gut health - gut health, probiotics, heartburn, reflux, constipation

When our children were small, the doctor's solution to constipation was laxatives.

When our daughter was diagnosed with CRPS (a chronic pain syndrome) at 12, the only solution to her constipation from the doctor was laxatives.

When I used to get sick from colds & flus all winter long, antibiotics were the answer.

When I had reflux and heartburn, acid blockers were the suggested solution. No one ever mentioned that acid blockers may make things worse or that the issue was most likely not from too much stomach acid.

When I was on antibiotics, the answer was to go to the store to buy a probiotic or eat more yogurt (because probiotics are all the same). I don't think my doctor had a clue about probiotics at the time.

When I had gut issues I was told to eat "healthier" (more fruits and vegetables). I can't even tell you how bad that made my bloating, gas, and stomach pains. Wow, fiber hurt my stomach. And for me to take probiotics, I had to bear down and manage the discomforts because they came with a lot of discomforts.

Can someone please explain to me how increased intestinal permeability and hyperpermeability isn't "leaky gut?" Doesn't that mean the exact same thing? Sounds like people can't accept they were wrong so they call it something different so as to not have to accept the original name they denied forever.

When people ask me, "Are you a doctor? Then how do you know?" I say, "No, I'm not a doctor. Are you sure that's a bad thing? If doctors are working for you then great. I hope it works out for you. I fully support great doctors. I hope you find one."

I am not opposed to doctors at all. Guess where our general protocol guidelines came from? A gastroenterologist. In my opinion, a lot of the best information does come from doctors. But that doesn't mean all doctors are right about all things all the time.

Like many professions, there is a poor, good, better, and best selection for doctors.

There is tremendous information available to all of us now. Spend time researching all sides of an issue. Then make a decision for yourself.
